The FS class steam heating vans, also nicknamed the “Hot water bottle” carriages, were special vans introduced in the 1960s to provide heating for carriage trains following the withdrawal of steam locomotives by NZR. They were a common sight on passenger trains in the North and South Islands until fleet upgrades in the 1980s, introducing modern air conditioning and rendered them redundant.
