The official history of New Zealand Railways first 125 years.
New Zealand's first railway, from Christchurch to Ferrymead, was opened on 1 December 1863. After 125 years of technological and social change, this 7-kilometre, steam-powered system has now developed into a nationwide transport network comprising over 4200 kilometres of track and more than 400 diesel-electric and electric locomotives.
