NZR BC-1 bulk cement 4-wheel wagon - HOnz
The BC-1 class were a type of 18 bulk four-wheel cement wagons, introduced by NZR in 1964. The wagons became a common sight in both islands from then on. Further variations of the BC class were introduced, with larger hoppers from different manufacturers. The bogie version was known as the UBC.
In the 1980s the cement pods were mounted on 10ft ISO bases to fit container wagons. The last BC wagon was withdrawn in the early 1990s, although the pods remained in use for some time after (pods sold separately here). Today, cement is mainly transported in 20ft ISO containers.
One example has been preserved at the Silver Stream Railway in Upper Hutt, Wellington.
